Welcome to the World of Theatre

THEATRE i

Intro to Theatre

All the world's a stage,

and all the men and women merely players;

they have their exits and their entrances,

and one man in his time plays many parts…”

(As You Like It; Act II, Scene VII).

-William Shakespeare

   Theatre is a reflection of the world around us. It is meant to expose and explore the human condition.  Theatre is educational, and not just entertainment.

   The beauty of theatre is the process, and all it contains to bring a production to life. Theatre is the single most collaborative art form that exists. It takes many artisans to create a single production. The playwrights, composers, directors, designers, carpenters, painters, managers, musicians, technical crews and actors all work together in order to create their work of art.

   Students involved in theatre gain life-long skills that prepare them for "real-world" tasks. Preparation and deadlines are ever present when it comes to theatre; not unlike preparing for business presentations, or auditions which are like job interviews. Theatre is about problem solving and figuring out the "how to do." Creativity and research are essential. The words "I can't" do not exist in this world. Theatre is demanding, just like life, and requires great discipline and much preparation. At its core theatre is a sport of the mind and heart. It takes great minds, and a lot of heart to make it a success.
